Job Description

  • Administer medication and medical treatment in accordance with policies and physician’s orders.

  • Provides psychiatric nursing interventions and treatment education, provide intervention appropriate to the specific treatment needs of the patient.

  • Based upon unit assignment, psychiatric nursing sub-specialties at RHH include adolescent, adult, geriatric, substance abuse, and mental health disorders. PRN RNs must be cross trained to accept varying population assignments.

  • Coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges, and assure that relevant nursing documentation is completed in a timely manner.

  • Supervises special treatment interventions such as de-escalation, physical restraint, seclusion, nonviolent restraint, and special precautions.

  • Teach patients’ families about the patient’s condition, and how to react in certain scenarios upon return home or during visitation.

  • Provides supervision and quality assurance checks to assure patient supervision, environmental safety, therapeutic structure, facilitation of patient groups and activities of daily living, and delivery of quality patient care by direct care workers.

  • Provide timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of patient behavior, medication administration, medical interventions, treatment planning, and treatment interventions. Documentation reflects professional standards.

  • Assesses dysfunction, assist clients to regain or improve their coping abilities, and prevent further disability. Interventions focus on psychiatric-mental health clients and include health promotion, preventive management of a therapeutic environment; assisting client with self-care activities; administering and monitoring psychobiological treatment regimens; health teaching; including psycho-education; crisis intervention and counseling and case management.

  • Assists CNAs with lifting and transports, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention.Assists with patient ambulation, transfers from bed to wheelchair; turn or reposition bedridden patients. Implements fall precautions.

  • Examine patients for bruises, blood in urine or other injuries/wounds.

  • Prepares and gives injections and enemas, monitors catheters, records food/fluid input/output, dresses wounds.

  • Collects samples for testing, performs routine laboratory tests as directed by supervisor, prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an iv) and records prescribed medications.

  • Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy.
