The Nurse Manager under direction of the Director of Nursing (DON) supervises and provides professional and technical guidance to nursing staff. Performs complex and varied tasks requiring independent knowledge, its application to a variety of situations, as well as exercise of independent judgment. Participates in all management functions of the nursing department (planning, organizing, leading), and assists with management in other departments when their supervisors are not available or on site. The Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring coordinated delivery of patient care in accordance with the established standards of care, mental and behavioral health practice and hospital and residential policy, goals, and objectives.  This position assists in contributing to the facility’s philosophy, objectives, educational and Quality Improvement efforts. The Nurse Manager represents the DON while working closely with the program supervisor and the Administrator on Call (AOC) in handling situations throughout the facility that may arise during evening and weekend hours.



Education: Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing required.  A Bachelor’s degree is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience in behavioral health nursing management.


  • Minimum of two years of psychiatric nursing experience. At least three (3) years’ experience in an inpatient behavioral health-care facility providing dual diagnosis treatment preferred.
  • Minimum of one year management, charge and/or administrative experience required.

Licensure:  Current RN license to practice by the State Board of Nursing. 

Additional Requirements: Knowledge of JCAHO, OSHA requirements, and state regulatory requirements preferred.  CPR certification and successful completion of the hospital’s designated behavioral and physical management training program (CPI, physical holds), including de-escalation required.  May be required to work flexible hours.



  1. Assists the Director of Nursing in the day-to-day operation of Nursing services, including policy and program implementation, conflict resolution, and other operational issues.
  2. Acts as a resource person to staff in the nursing management of psychiatric patients with medical problems.
  3. Partners with the DON and PI/Risk Management Director to research and resolve issues.
  4. Coordinates with the Human Resources Director and Director of Nursing for staff development programs.
  5. Provides recommendations to improve the quality of services delivered by staff and the Hospital.          


  1. Overseeing training and orienting new nurses and nursing assistants, supervising staff performance and informing DON of any training needs. Participates in New Employee Orientation as needed.
  2. Overseeing scheduling and coverage, providing fair and consistent coordination of staff and their schedules, and ensuring adequate levels of competent staff to meet organizational needs
  3. Evaluates staff for 90 day and annual performance evaluations, performance improvement plans, and disciplinary action under the direction and supervision of the Director of Nursing.
  4. Ensure proper documentation by nursing staff as required by hospital and State standards, assisting in audits to assure standards are met.
  5. Conducts medical emergency drills on a regular basis and ensures staff know their responsibilities in medical emergencies.
  6. Ensures staff  are current on mandatory trainings and licenses per hospital and State standards.
  7. Understands the nurse manager role in the P.I process and participates as required.

INFECTION CONTROL – A nurse manager will be identified to fulfill these duties.

  1. Responsible for the implementation of hospital-wide infection surveillance and reporting.
  2. Prepares quarterly reports of hospital-wide Infection Control activities for the medical staff and hospital via the Safety committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Quality Council.
  3. Makes recommendations related to the clinical management of infection control problems.
  4. Reports all required diseases to Health Department and documents report.
  5. Ensures that Infection Control policies are complete and current.
  6. Serves on Safety Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, and Quality Council.
  7. Participates in Infection Control orientation for all employees as needed.
  8. Provides education as required and/or requested.
  9. Monitors completed patient and staff infection reports for trends.
  10. Provides consultation on infection risk assessment, prevention and control strategies.
  11. Oversees the PPD compliance for all employees and patients.
  12. Conducts annual evaluation of Infection Control Annual Plan and related programs.



  1. Reviews and gives recommendations on incidents, under the direction and supervision of the Director of Nursing
  2. Assumes responsibility for facility during evening and weekend hours and utilizes the Administrator on Call (AOC) for direction if needed.
  3. Evaluates patients/residents milieu activity for shift and reports to AOC/DON if applicable.
  4. Assists/cooperates in the assignments/scheduling for nursing and nonnursing staff according to acuity and budgetary guidelines.
  5. Assist in implementing facility policies and procedures.
  6. Manages emergency situations while following appropriate protocols and policies.
  7. Participate in Intake staffing and approvals.
  8. Facilitate morning and afternoon staff meetings.
  9. Participate in quality assurance programs.


  1. Takes a significant role in the interdisciplinary process working with family therapists, residential therapists, patient advocate, TRAP personnel, and primary therapists to provide excellent patient/resident care and positive outcomes.
  2. Employ principles of communication, interviewing techniques, problem solving and crisis intervention when performing psychotherapeutic interventions and role models for staff, based on knowledge of psychiatric and medical nursing procedures, as well as the plan of care.
  3. Demonstrates an ability to respond and provide direction with increased flexibility during crisis and emergency situations.
  4. Functions effectively as a team leader, using tact, sensitivity, sound judgment and a professional attitude when relating to patients, families, visitors and co-workers at all times.
  5. Addresses patients/residents, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in a pleasant and respectful manner and maintains favorable working relationships.
  6. Responds to patients with empathy and positive interpersonal skills.

  4. Consistently utilize universal precautions and environmental safety guidelines to maintain an environment conducive to safety and that promotes health and reinforces the safety and dignity of the patient/resident.
