Job Description

OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

The Director of Nursing (DON) is a dynamic leader of the nursing department that is composed of nurses, nursing assistants, dieticians, nutritionists and administrative staff. The DON works collaboratively with leadership and other departments and is responsible for the delivery of evidence based care to patients. The DON is responsible for executive and managerial level duties. The DON should be instrumental in creating an empowering and professional environment. The DON must be able to be a visionary for the department and how the department integrates into the entire organization. The DON must lead and engage employees to provide optimal patient care and achieve the goals of the organization.

  • Responsible for designing systems and process that achieve optimal organizational outcomes.
  • Responsible for planning, directing, implementing and continuous improvement of nursing services within the organization and providing leadership and vision for all nursing staff.
  • Maintain standards of patient care in compliance with organization policies and procedures as well as State licensing regulations and Joint Commission standards.
  • Direct supervisor to nurse managers, administrative staff, and other staff as assigned.
  • Monitors nursing staff performance and provides leadership for performance improvement.
  • Develop and implement training programs for nursing staff.
  • Ensures adequate staffing patterns in order to ensure continuous and timely availability of nursing services while managing department budget.
  • Responsible for fiscal management of the nursing department including budget and capital expenditures.
  • Participates as member of various committees. Functions as active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Masters Degree in Nursing required.
  • At least 5 years experience in similar position in hospital, inpatient behavioral health or psychiatric facility, and at least 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Psychiatric nursing experience required.
  • Must possess excellent critical thinking and leadership skills.
  • Must demonstrate previous experience related to Joint Commission hospital and behavioral health standards and processes for preparing for Joint Commission surveys as well as continual readiness.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated budget development and management skills.

LICENSURE:

Current nursing license in the State of Arizona.
